Use Case: Cross-Domain Mission Rehearsal with Physics-Based Extended Reality

The Challenge

In both aerospace and maritime defense environments, readiness is built on repetition. The problem is that repetition often comes with risk.

Maritime interception crews operating Combatant Craft Assault vessels train at high speeds in unpredictable seas. At 40 to 50 knots, repeated impact places significant strain on the bodies of special forces. Over time, concussions, spinal compression, and joint injuries accumulate before the mission even begins.

In aerospace maintenance environments, technicians perform blind bolt-hole inspections inside confined aircraft structures. They rely on experience, physical positioning, and interpretation of eddy current signals while reaching into spaces they cannot see. Small variations in angle or pressure can affect inspection results. Documentation is often manual. Repeatability is difficult.

These different mission sets have similar constraints: How do you rehearse complex, high-consequence tasks without increasing injury exposure, variability, or operational cost?

AVATAR’s Solution

AVATAR applies a shared training architecture powered by extended reality, physics-based virtual modeling, and artificial intelligence-driven performance analytics.

In the Combatant Craft Assault simulation project, we created a fully immersive extended reality environment that reconstructs real-world geography using high-fidelity terrain data. Operators navigate dynamic wave systems, real propulsion physics, vessel mass, wind forces, and drift. Every movement is governed by realistic hydrodynamic behavior.

Importantly, this is not a scripted simulation. It is an open-play virtual environment where crews triangulate target vessels, coordinate intercept paths, and rehearse timing under operational stress. Instructors observe through a real-time spectator interface, reviewing decisions from multiple vantage points.

Artificial intelligence systems capture performance data, movement patterns, and mission outcomes to support structured after-action review.

Similarly, we conducted a research project with Navy Aviation, which demonstrated how extended reality and spatial registration can enhance nondestructive evaluation workflows. Using inertial measurement units and motion tracking, AVATAR created a virtual overlay capable of mapping inspection probe movement inside aircraft structures.

The objective was to digitally record what was inspected, when, and by whom, supporting long-term data analysis and repeatability.

These efforts represent more than isolated simulations. Each one is a scalable framework for mission rehearsal, guided performance, and structured data capture across domains.

Impact

By shifting critical portions of rehearsal into high-fidelity virtual environments, we help reduce physical injury exposure and errors during high-risk training cycles. Crews can practice decision-making, coordination, and timing without absorbing the cumulative strain that often accompanies live repetition.

In aerospace maintenance workflows, extended reality enhances repeatability in blind inspection environments. Spatial tracking and structured overlays reduce variability, support consistent execution, and create clearer inspection histories over time. Artificial intelligence further strengthens this model by capturing performance data, identifying patterns, and supporting structured analytics that inform readiness decisions.

The result is stronger documentation, more informed long-term readiness modeling, and scalable deployment across distributed units without increasing operational burden.

Whether practicing on a fast-moving vessel in heavy seas or inspecting structural components inside an aircraft fuselage, operators benefit from high-fidelity virtual rehearsal before live execution.

Extended reality provides immersion. Artificial intelligence provides insight. Virtual physics provides realism. Together, they form a digital foundation for modern defense readiness. AVATAR does not replace real-world training. We make it smarter, safer, and scalable.

If your mission demands precision, repetition, and readiness without added risk, let’s build the right digital rehearsal environment for your team.
